RomneyCare’s Prognosis

Americans are taking a close look at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as a potential contender for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. They also should take a close look at RomneyCare, his signature legislative achievement, and the damage it’s doing to the Bay State’s economy and health sector.

This is particularly important because RomneyCare provided the roadmap for ObamaCare.

Both are based on an individual mandate requiring residents to have health insurance or pay a penalty. Both force most businesses to participate or pay a fine. Both expand coverage through Medicaid and government-controlled insurance exchanges. Both subsidize highly prescriptive (and costly) insurance policies. And both threaten our already fragile fiscal health with an unprecedented entitlement expansion.
